Flames of Hate ....

.... this is the headline of our local newspaper this morning, "The Star". Many people have become victims of xenophobic violence in Gauteng. It's quite frightening. It started in Alexandra last week and has spread to the northern suburbs (Honeydew and Kaya Sands - which are around the corner from where we live) as well as in Soweto, Primrose (on the East Rand), Jeppestown and Cleveland. Mozambicans, Zimbabweans, Malawians - all forced out of their shacks. People are being set alight by locals who are angry that the foreigners have come in and are taking their jobs. Who knows why this has happened all of a sudden - personally I think there are political groups going into the areas and stirring up unrest on purpose. Whatever the reason, its disgraceful. Church groups are wanting Government to call in the army and declare a state of emergency.

We went to Al Fresco for lunch yesterday and had to go a different route as Beyers Naude Road had been closed due to the unrest. How sad that we could sit and enjoy a stunning lunch with friends, knowing that just down the road, people were being attacked just because they're foreign. We all know that the government are to blame for the influx - they should have dealt with it properly through Home Affairs - now innocent people are suffering. Its scary and sickening ... ... ...
