Waste not, want not!

I was reading an article about “Go Green Tips” and how people are being encouraged to save water & electricity and generally to “go green”! It’s quite a bit easier today, I would imagine, than in the old days and yet so many of us (myself included) find it such a mission.

A reality of life in the war days was cooking and washing with no electricity, recycling EVERYTHING from paperclips to bone, even eating whale meat and offal. Imagine how hard it was for the women during the war to feed and clothe their children on paltry rations?

Everything was salvaged – paper, rags, metal and rubber. These were all washed and then tied into bundles before being put out.

Women walked or cycled to the shops to buy the meager necessities for their families. They had to queue for hours come rain or shine, before heading on home. I was reading that the average adult’s weekly allowance included:

4 oz bacon or ham
2 oz cheese
One egg
4 oz margarine
2 oz tea
3 pints milk
(By June 1941 this had almost halved)

I can remember my Grandmother telling me how they used to suck on a tiny piece of toffee when they had their tea to sweeten it. I little piece of home-made toffee that would be wrapped up and savored for a long time!

Maybe its time I started giving thanks and enjoyed saving water and electricity! I’m going to try and make my own compost and recycle plastic. What can you do to “go green”?

Those were the days when kids walked 20km barefoot through the snow to school...

We have changed out all our lighbulbs, I hang clothes out to dry most days, recycle, use cloth bags when shopping, all yard waste is composted.

We are getting smart meters installed this spring. They are going to be great. You get a lower rate if you use electricity at non-peak hours. So, I will do a load of laundry late at night (for example)
