Picnic!

After all that rain on Saturday afternoon/evening, Sunday dawned with the sun shining and the sky chrystal clear! We decided to pack a picnic basket and go to the Vaal River for the day with friends. The Vaal River has its source in the Drakensberg mountains and forms the border between the Free State and Gauteng. We went to a resort called “Arendsnes” (Eagles Nest) about 100 k’s from home.

It was such a relaxing day! P took my hammock, but I never got to lie on it! Brit took that honour and I didn’t mind at all! It was good to sit and enjoy some nice cold wine with my friends, chatting quietly and listening to children run and play on the lush, green grass or the intermittent sound of Claudio gently strumming on his guitar.

While P is not a fisherman at all, Ezio took his tackle and did some fly fishing. There are no trout in the Vaal, but they do catch bass and yellow tail. They have a “catch and release” policy, but I have been told that the water there is not great so it would not be a good idea to eat anyhow. I loved watching the men cast there rods into the quiet water, and found listening to the sound of the river, running so relaxing.

We really should get out of town a little more, especially in the summer! It’s not far to drive and the tranquility it brought was worth every minute!

P enjoying the cool water!

That looks lovely and relaxing!!! I loved your WW with the water spilling over the stones. Yes - we also need to go out and about more often!

That was a great idea. But where on the Vaal were you and how long from Joburg? I am always looking for nice places to picnic at around Pretoria. I usually end up in my backgarden. A hammock is top of my wish list!

I think P had the best idea of all there where he was sitting in the water.
