Cook-Out!

Due to the fact that we have our cook-out again on Sunday (my but time flies!) and as I have had a number of questions about how it works, I thought I would right about our dinner club and how it works for us!

  • We're a group of 11 people (5 couples and 1 single guy)
  • Each couple gets a turn to host
  • The hosts choose the theme and buy the prize
  • The hosts supply the starter and dessert
  • Each couple make a main dish according to the theme
  • These dishes are numbered. After the dinner has been served, each person gets to vote for their favourite dish (obviously you may not pick your own!) and the dish with the most votes wins!
  • Cook-Out (dinner club) happens every 6 weeks or so and is either held on a Saturday early evening, or Sunday lunch
We have eaten some AMAZING meals and tasted things that we might not have normally. For example, I am not a big lover of mussels. Friends of ours made the most divine mussel pot with cream and garlic - it was so delicious, I had two helpings and now I would probably order something like that in a restaurant whereas I would not have done that before! We have had a curry theme, Turkish, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and "potjie", (which is a cast iron 3 legged pot that is heated over hot coals and makes a type of stew)!

This month the theme is GREEK! Now, I wonder what I should make this time? I thought about Moussaka - but like the paela at our Spanish day, I think there will be a dozen of those! Maybe some Greek Lamb - hmmm could be a couple of those too! Not sure which route I'm going to take, but I must find something unusual!

Maybe I'll make πιπεριές με τυρί! Ha! Bet you didn't know I could write in Greek! Just kidding! I'll be sure to let you know what I decide on when I've decided!

This sounds like a great idea. I love tasting and experimenting with new dishes. And Greek food is always good. I just love the veggie platter at Natassa and Melina's in Brooklyn Design Square. But whatever you cook, make sure it is warm - the weather is just so cold at present in Gauteng.

I really would likle to start something like that as well. Now I just need to get some friends together who would be interested.

Maybe I should time my next trip to Jhb to fall on a Cook-Out weekend...

What a fun thing to do with friends. I think every six weeks is perfect...no one burns out!
