In 1999 Philip and I went to Krakow to visit Paul, Caroline and the girls! What a really special holiday we had. Not only because we got to spend time with our lovely family, but I experienced my first white Christmas, we got to visit the Rynek and do some fabulous shopping, I went on a toboggan and got to see some of the most beautiful places. We also got to visit some of the saddest places (Auschwitz) but it was a holiday to remember!

One of the most special tours we went on, had to be Schindler’s Tour! We followed the steps of Jewish prisoners from the Jewish Bookstore and ended at Wawel, the limestone hill where the royal palaces still stand. We had a tour guide called Eva and she was quite amazing. She was so well read and extremely interesting. When we got back to the bookstore, I was looking for something special to buy, to remind me of this incredible day. Philip and I wandered amongst the dusty old shelves, looking at books and tiny artefacts. Suddenly I found “him” – he was just perfect!

Our carved, wooden Rabbi who stands so quietly and serenely on top of our display cabinet. The blue and white stripes on his prayer shawl that cover his head are typical of the colours worn and also represent the colour of the prison clothes worn by the Jews in Auschwitz.  His face has little wrinkles, lines of wisdom and a calmness about it.

A special reminder of a an incredible holiday!

This reminds me of our trip to Dachau while we were in Europe in 1996. It's nice that you have such a special piece to remember your trip. (I was so disturbed that I all I could do was stand outside and cry)
