Taken looking over Sun City from the lift at the Cabana's - 5th floor
Sun City is a luxury casino resort about two hours drive from Johannesburg, situated in the North West Province, close to Rustenburg and the Pilanesburg National Park. It was the dream and developed by Sol Kerzner, a local hotel magnate. During the South Africa’s apartheid era, the government at the time banned all immoral entertainment, like gambling and topless revue shows. Because Bophuthatswana was an independent state, all this was allowed there and Sun City soon became a popular holiday and week-end destination.
South Africa was subject to a United Nations cultural boycott in the 1980’s and international artists were not allowed to perform here, but because Sun City was in the homeland many artists performed at its Superbowl – Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Queen – to name a few. Today, Bophuthatswana falls into the North West province and Sun City has shed is previous stigmas!
The resort has four hotels and in addition, the Vacation Club which is a time-share resort. My friend Bev (who lives in London) owns time-share at VC and invited a group of us to join her for a couple of days!
I have decided to share our trip in pictures rather than words! Hope you enjoy your visit as much as we did!
Preparing dinner on the first night, Veronica, Bev and Annemarie!
Walking along the bridge from the Casino to the Valley of the Waves. This bridge shakes and emulates a volcano every hour. It feels quite wierd!
Bev and I in the waves! We had SUCH fun! It was a hot day and the water was divine!
This swing bridge created HOOTS of laughter! Veronica was too scared to walk over it as it swings back and forth as you walk along it. It's really beautiful in those gardens!
Isn't he sweet?
This cheeky monkey came INTO our kitchen and stole a packet of Liquorice Allsorts off the table! We were VERY relieved to find it was only a packet of sweets and not the car
keys which were lying right beside it!
We had a lovely time and can't wait to go back!
