Reunion!

"A gathering of the members of a group who have been separated", "the act or process of coming together again"!

In 1979 a group of 37 girls, matriculated from Greenhill Convent in Bloemfontein.  They made history as they were the biggest class the Convent had ever had!  The matrics lost their common room as space was needed for a second class, so that this class of girls could be split in two!  A diverse group of girls, from all sectors of society - but a good bunch!  Despite differences , we were a family.  So ably led by Sister Cecilia, who unfortunately, wasn't there when we finished!   It doesn't seem like 30 years ago ...

When I received the invitation to attend the Greenhill Reunion held in Bloemfontein this week-end, I didn't hesitate.  I had already bought tickets to see the musical "Cats", but that did not stop me from going! (I managed to sell my ticket to a friend!)  I drove down to Bloemfontein on Saturday morning.  The plan was to meet at St Joseph's Catholic Church just before 6.

I would be lying if I said I was only excited! I was a little nervous too.  Who would be there, and what would they be like?  Would we have anything in common?  Besides catching up, would there be much to talk about?

I was a little disappointed as only 4 of the 37 girls were there (there were lots of girls altogether from other years) and I became quite emotional when I saw Jenni Pentz - she arrived in full school uniform ...

... looking every bit like a school girl!

Yverne Butler (Walker) - our head girl, Claire vd Merwe (Noonan), Jenni Raine (Pentz) and I were the only girls there.  We had a fabulous time, catching up, listening to stories and looking at photographs.  What lovely families the girls all have!  Yverne is still in Springfontein, married to Robert.  She has three children, two boys and a girl.  Jenni lives in Sydney, Australia.  She is married to Rob and has a son and daughter.  Claire is married and has a daughter and a son.  She teaches at Eunice Primary School.

Me, Yverne, Claire and Jenni

Our dinner was held at the "Beef and Reef", owned and run by the Petrella Twins!  Now anyone who was at the convent, or CBC in those days, knew Marco and Mauro!  We had a lovely dinner there, the food and service were excellent (the wine was pretty good too!).  I thought it was a nice touch having the dinner there.  We always had a good relationship with CBC (Christian Brothers College).

Mauro and Marco - they still have naughty faces!

I am really glad that I was at the reunion.  I have decided that I would like to go again next year, especially if  Janet Hyland (Sr Cecelia) will be there.  She was unable to come this year as she is off to the States in December.  I enjoyed spending quality time with my old class mates and hopefully we will keep in touch and can get together again - soon!

Semper Fidelis!
(Always faithful)

Sad that only 4 came but at least you got a chance to speak to everyone, I found if there are many you dont get to catch up with everyone.
