Show & Tell Friday!

Welcome to “Show and Tell Friday!” Do you have something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, or a treasured collection. Look around your closet if you have to share! Share photos and the story that goes with your special item.

My Grandmother (who I called Gayva as a little girl!) instilled a love good china in me! She always had special pieces in her home! Nothing excites me more than buying or receiving a piece of Royal Doulton or Royal Albert – another of my favourites is Royal Copenhagen … so fine and delicate!

When my parents married in 1960, my Grandmother took a trip on the QE2 to the UK. She visited the Royal Doulton factory and watched them making “Alice in Wonderland”. She could not afford to buy one of the figurines, but did get the rubbing off the copper plate from the book Alice is holding on her lap. If you look at the pages, you can actually read the words …” the time has come the Walrus said, to talk of many things, of shoes and ships, and sealing wax , of cabbages and kings …” She wrote about her visit on this delicate piece of paper and how much she wished she could have bought one. Two years later, my great-aunt and uncle went to the UK for a visit and they bought my Gayva “Alice” as a gift! It was always the most precious of her figurines. I loved it just as much.

I remember as a little girl, looking at Alice and imagining her to jump and run after the white rabbit! When my Gayva died at the ripe old age of 85, my Mum gave me Alice and she has prize spot in my display cabinet at home
